How can Therapy Help me?

When your ability to function well is compromised by anxiety, depression, or anger therapy can help you learn skills and strategies to manage your emotions. It can also help with improving your communication and conflict resolution skills for better relationships at home and in the workplace. Therapy can be helpful in working to set goals and follow through, to accept changes or manage the effects of past traumatic experiences. Through therapy you can discover new perspectives to old problems and become empowered to make changes. You can gain understanding of your own behavior and your responses to the behaviors of others. Whether it’s managing stress, learning to live in the present, or making healthier choices, therapy can be useful.

What can I expect from a typical session?

Sessions are typically 45 minutes long once a week, unless otherwise indicated. During session, we will focus on developing new strategies and gaining greater understanding of how your thoughts, feelings and behavior get in the way of achieving your goals. You may be assigned “homework” and you will be expected to be an active participant. I tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs within a framework of compassion and teaming.

Is Psychotherapy Confidential?

In general, the law protects the confidentiality of all communications between a client and a psychotherapist. Information is not disclosed without written permission.

However, there are a few exceptions to this rule. Exceptions include:

  • Suspected child physical, sexual, or emotional abuse as well as neglect of a child. (Including the downloading or streaming of child pornography through electronic means)
  • Dependent adult or elder abuse. The therapist is required by law to file reports with the appropriate authorities immediately.
  • If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person/s. The therapist must notify the police and inform the intended victim.
  • If a client intends to harm themselves. The therapist will make every effort to enlist their cooperation in ensuring their safety. When necessary, further measures may be taken without their permission to ensure their safety.

How Long will Therapy Take?

Unfortunately, this is not possible to say in a general FAQs page. Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them. The length of time can depend on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek counseling in the first place.
